Working with your birth chart

These last 18 months I have found myself increasingly interested in astrology, this year especially, not top leats to understand more of myself but to understand how planetary forces are shaping my reality.

Recently I have been exploring my children’s birth charts too, to better support their soul growth and needs as we begin a new term ahead, albeit one of increasingly unschooling all of us.

I have also studied my brother and parent’s charts too, to better understand our soul connection and hereditary challenges.

It fascinates me the commonalities and ‘synastry’ as it is known in the astrological world - an astrological technique to compare two people’s birth charts to analyse their relationship dynamics and compatibility.

I discovered that my eldest and I share Pisces moon, Capricorn rising and Scorpio north node, which is apparently an incredibly rare and highly synchronised mirror relationship. I am told that in astrology, when a parent and child share multiple identical placements like this, then it is a textbook sign of a generational karmic bond.

Because he is my eldest, his birth - apparently - mathematically triggered major structural changes in my life. Of course we could say of this of any birth, but by sharing these exact points, he acts as an absolute mirror to my outer personality, my innermost emotional vulnerabilities, and my soul’s life purpose.

I am told we are quite literally walking the same spiritual path. My son's presence in my life is said to act as a constant catalyst, pushing me to confront my shadows, while my own life experience serves as an involuntary roadmap for his soul's evolution.

This fascinates me.

It was home schooling, or at least my children’s suffering in the school system and their need to be home schooled, which highlighted to me, that in allowing my children their soul expression, they were helping set me free.

I always had an inkling that we might home school. I couldn’t see how it might work but I took my eldest along to home school gatherings before he had begun pre-school such was my interest. Sadly I wasn’t supported in my quest to tread a different path at the time, and I appreciate we no doubt had to go through what we went through, at least from a soulful perspective, to learn what we have learned and for the children to take themselves out of system that was slowly stifling and killing them.

Ever since, whenever I try to direct them down a path that creates resolute resistance in them, then I know that I am generally coming from a place of my conditioning and not honouring their insight and wisdom.

They ask me to look into my shadows, my eldest especially, and look at my own unhelpful patterns and ways of relating. In this way I can see that we are bringing to the light generational karmic bonds - a spiritual and astrological contract between souls within a family lineage to carry, confront, and ultimately heal inherited ancestral patterns.

Generational karma is said to represent the sum total of all physical, emotional, behavioural and mental traits and characteristics, which have been inherited from forbears and which we carry in our DNA and soul.

Apparently, instead of starting life with a completely clean slate, a soul entering a generational bond volunteers to incarnate into a specific family timeline to resolve "unfinished business." Generational karma manifests through both psychological and energetic blueprints, which typically show up in families in a few distinct ways:

Repetitive Family Themes: Family karma mirrors a genetic pool, where certain major life events—like specific health issues, financial collapses, or failed marriages—repeat across multiple generations.

Unconscious Emotional Inheritances: Individuals have inherited their parents’ unconscious emotional patterns. such as the mother's unresolved grief/anxiety or the father's unspoken rage or fear around financial security, Individuals then need to process these deep-seated fears or emotions that do not actually belong to their own current life experiences.

Behavioural Echoes: The underlying energy often presents as systemic family dynamics, including dysfunctional roles, limiting beliefs, judgments, negative traits, family grudges, fears, or traumas passed down from parent to child.,

I’ve seen all of this show up in my healing work with clients. There are themes in families, and sometimes people are processing emotions, which are not their own, and behavioural echoes do continue down a line.

In a generational karmic bond, one or both individuals usually act as the cycle breaker. This involves making a conscious effort toward breaking inherited negative familial patterns, beliefs, and behaviors to stop them being passed onto future generations.

Thus for my eldest son and I, sharing a perfect energetic mirror, means he won’t let me be stagnant. His identical placements mean that whenever I heal a piece of my own emotional baggage or learn to step out of my comfort zone, I am actively clearing the path and changing the energetic DNA for him, too.

This spurs me on.

I had a sense of this, how many of us are here to clear generational woundings both up and down the line, but to have this validated is very helpful.

It is also helpful to understand more the birth charts of my children to better support them as we move into a new school term. I have never been one to conform to the society for the sake of it, I was raised never to be a sheep (which later backfired on my parents when they wondered why my brother and I always had to be so different from our peers), and I very much believe in allowing our heart and souls to be our guide in life.

I am hoping that I am raising my children similarly, to trust in their intuition as they make choices to determine the flow of their life. With hope they may even develop an interest in their birth chart and be curious how cosmos forces are shaping their reality.

It is my wish to support them in this, so they can solve spiritually, allowing their soul expression in this life time, and fulfilling whatever contracts they came in with.

This in contrast to the many children who are told how to be, what to wear, how to behave, how to present to the world, even what subjects to study and jobs to take, and therefore have very little connection to their own inner voice, to their intuition, and essential nature.

Even adults are living their life according to what it expected of them, seeking validation and input from others, devoid of awareness of self, let alone essential nature.

Many are even wearing wrist bands which tell them when to move, when to drink water, when to sleep, such is their need to be told by others how to be in this world, totally overriding their own inner rhythm and self awareness.

We are all of us so different and yet a part of the whole. What works for one may not work for another, and we would be wise to honour this, whilst also appreciating that we are part of a whole and have a purpose within that too.

And this is the reason I have found my exploration into astrology so helpful, as it validates my sense of how things are, of the purpose of the incarnation of the soul - why we choose the parents we do and what we are here to learn and heal for the greater good.

As a soul, we chose the very moment of our birth because of what the planets were doing and how that might influence and affect us and our soul growth in this lifetime.

I highly recommend taking a look at your birth chart as it might help explain things. To do so go here and enter your details.

You’ll see it resds, “Extended settings: House System, Aspects, Orbs”, click in here and tick ASC and MC. There’s lots to read, I’m especially curious about sun, moon, ascendant, Chiron and Lilith, but read where you are drawn.

Of course you can see an astrologer who will help you make sense of this. I can highly recommend one of our Reiki students, Kerry Barnfather, who runs Aligned Potential Coaching, email her at hello@alignedpotentialcoaching.com. I have also had readings with Prue the last couple of birthdays, which is something Kerry can do too.

Enjoy owning and living your truth!

Love Emma x
