Believing in magic - bring Reiki into your life
The first step to positively changing our life is to believe.
If we would like to bring a child into the world, we have to believe it is possible.
If we would like to travel the world, we have to believe it is possible.
If we would like greater economic freedom, we have to believe it is possible.
If we would like to love ourself unconditionally, we have to believe it is possible.
If we would to see fairies and other elemental beings, then we have to believe.
Life offers us far more magic and mystery than we allow it.
As children we knew. But as adults we forgot. Somewhere in between it was conditioned and programmed out of us and reason and logic replaced intuition and gut instinct.
It is never too late to reclaim the magic and mystery - to recognise that reality is not fixed.
Once I knew. Then I forgot. And I almost took my own life because of the loss of connection to the magic, which pervaded my childhood. Life lost its joy and took me to a very dark place.
Then yoga and Reiki came into my life and I slowly started remembering. Life opened up. I let go, I healed, I learned to connect with, and trust in, my intuition and sixth sense again. The coincidences and synchronicities started flowing into my life and I began to recognise that magic infuses our life if we not only believe in it, but allow it.
It was synchronicity, which brought me to yoga. There was something about the word ‘yoga’ that got my attention. I had looked through the door of a yoga studio in Auckland where I was living on a working holiday in New Zealand when I was nearing the end of a destructive relationship. I didn’t have the confidence to enter the room and life had to take a different direction first. Back home in Guernsey, during the darkest period of my life, which I almost didn’t survive, I bought a book on yoga and meditation.
But first I turned to running, to help me run my life forward and process the events of the past few years that had caused so much angst. I ran the London marathon. Then my body really did need yoga. As it happened one of my running pals who had been introduced to me through a friend of a friend had a boyfriend attending a yoga class and I was welcomed to join him.
The teacher turned out to be one of my childhood babysitters, such is coincidence. My brother came with me to the class - it was the only way I would get through the door, such was my crushing lack of self confidence and self-esteem at the time - and the rest is history. I was hooked from that very first session. I had always loved gymnastics as a child, spent hours practising in the garden with the fairies and my imaginary friend, as if I was even then trying to find my way deeper into my body. But it was more than that, yoga freed my mind in a way nothing else did and it started to make me feel increasingly alive. A remembering was beginning.
It was also synchronicity, which brought me to my Reiki Master who helped me to change my life in ways I could never have imagined, believing that I could follow my heart and write. She made an announcement after yoga one night, at a class I had almost begged the teacher to let me attend. She was going to run Escape from Stress meditation sessions and something made me interested.
My boyfriend joined me at the first session to once again give me courage to get through the door. Here, I was introduced to a world of crystals, pendulum dowsing and Reiki. The next day I noticed a flyer in the kitchen at my new work place, about intuitive life coaching using Reiki, with the exact same lady who was running the Escape from Stress sessions.
I started seeing her for intuitive life coaching and infusing my life with Reiki, undertaking my Reiki Level One and then my Two, later my Master Level. Reiki was changing things at a fast pace. Soon, I sold my house, left my job, split with the boyfriend, gave the cats to my parents and followed my heart to Australia. I found myself drawn to Byron Bay and to a hostel out at Belongil, next to a yoga centre. I just wanted to practice yoga as much as I could.
It turned out that the guy who owned and ran the centre, was married to a Guernsey girl. Years later I found myself coincidentally living in a cottage directly next to her brother’s cottage here on Guernsey. What’s the chances of that!
This man helped shape my life. He inspired in me a deeper passion for yoga. He introduced me to the Hare Krishnas. He helped me believe that anything is possible if we align with it.
That trip itself also shaped my life. I was put in touch with people who shone a light on the path ahead and helped me to heal and begin to believe in myself and the magic that pervades this universe. There were many coincidences and synchronicities and they continued even when I came home.
By then I knew I was returning to Byron the next year to undertake a teacher training program with a different teacher, who had come into my life at the end of that trip. It was coincidental in many ways, that he was just beginning his teacher training journey at the time I was beginning mine as a student.
Back in Guernsey for nine months, a coincidental meeting in a bar in town with a friend of a friend landed me a brilliant job covering a maternity leave in the fiduciary department of a local bank so I could save money. This was the first time I actually enjoyed working in finance, it was a great team, and even though I was only on contract, they gifted me a bonus.
Another coincidental meeting with a friend of a friend in a pub here in Guernsey found me somewhere to stay in Byron near to the yoga studio where I would be training, out near Suffolk Park. It was all very strange, and yet I was beginning to notice that there was an invisible force shaping my life and I felt divinely guided and supported.
What’s also interesting about all of this - just after I ran the marathon, before the yoga and the Reiki, I decided to invite two British Blue kittens into my life. I was living with my brother in the house we co-owned at the time, and we decided to name the kittens after our grandfathers, Alfie and Bertie. Lo and behold, and quite strangely - mind blowing - when we saw their pedigree papers, these were the names already chosen for them, but the longer versions, Alfred and Albert.
Bertie, had been born with a wizard beard and had cost me less because of it. However he was the most joyful, loving and indeed hapless cat I have ever met and helped to heal our hearts. The cats moved to my parents’ house when my brother and I sold up and set ourselves free of the mortgage and our lives here on Guernsey. My brother joined me for a few weeks in Byron and on the day he arrived we received some sad news - Bertie had been killed by a car in my parents’ quiet clos. In some way I always felt that his mission was then complete - he had helped us find our soul paths again.
I say that because Byron defined our life in so many ways. When I had finished my teacher training the year later, my brother joined me again, giving up the life he had been trying to create in London in the intervening period. He’s still there now. He undertook a yoga teacher training course himself, with the guy whose wife was from Guernsey. It was on that course he met his partner, and mum to my niece. They live in Mullum, a little outside of Byron, but my brother works and surfs in Byron.
Life has continued in that fashion ever since. I try to live from my heart to the best of my awareness in any moment. I look for signs; birds, numbers, situations, the metaphysics of body complaints, and I try to listen to the moon, the land and the stars - I see the sacred in everything and am committed to my soul path and to honouring the Goddess in St Martins here in Guernsey especially (she represents Gaia ultimately).
Some people - many people - think I’m mad. My old school acquaintances think me arrogant and aloof because I don’t live like they do. But this is the thing, people label us crazy and mad when we start living with more magical awareness in our life. It challenges the way they have been taught to view the world. They will ridicule us and make us wrong to make their world view right. That’s okay. I don’t really care so much these days what others think. Thoughts come and go, they mean nothing in the end.
There was a time when I did care. When I wondered why I always had to be different, because being different does make life hard at times. But the more I have trodden this path the more I have been connected with people who are also conjuring magic into their life - who live outside the mainstream, who wish for their children to also be free of this conditioning and programming, which denies their own intuition and sense of self.
It doesn’t mean life is always easy, far from it. But I am conscious that the losses, the hard times, that they take me to edges and it is in the edges that we discover the riches.
I have experienced many edges these last five years as the life I created with E fell apart and a new one arose instead, one that has found us living increasingly unconventionally with the home schooling and the conscious uncoupling, or so they call it, as we continue to co-habit and co-parent, trying to maintain as much harmony as we can for our boys.
I had prayed for a good while for greater love and intimacy, for E and I to find a way together, after the trauma of the pandemic and the issues we had with our boys, let alone the death of one of our friends at a young age.
I’ve prayed for many years now and I know that our prayers always get answered, just never in the way we imagine. Prayer can turn our life upside down, not that people realise this, but how else can it get answered? Always the status quo has to change.
I was becoming increasingly passionate about Neolithic stones by then, curious about solar alignments especially, having been working with the moon too.
This.was around the time of the second lockdown and I was bored. I undertook another Reiki Master course online, a Karuna one, with a lady in America.
Reiki attunements change things. They usher in coincidence and synchronicity - they take us deeper into the magic matrix.
Around the same time we started seeing a new bengal cat on the school run. I also ordered my eldest son some bengal bedding. We have a bengal cat who was gifted to us a few weeks before my eldest was born and bengals are a theme in our life.
I had it in my mind I had to go to a certain dolmen for March equinox sunrise. We co-slept and I would need to somehow get out of bed without waking my youngest otherwise I would be doomed. I’d have to childcare instead as it wouldn’t have been fair to ask E to do it at such an early hour.
Somehow I awoke naturally before my alarm, and was able to ease myself out of bed without anyone waking. I drove to the dolmen and was shocked to find someone else already in there, a first for me and for him.
To cut a long story short, it turned out that he is also a Reiki Master teacher, also born in 1975, the year of the rabbit, also a Neolithic enthusiast, also with a passion for the sacred, magic and mystery of life, and weirdly, he also has a Bengal cat, and while his is called Bazoo, ours is called Bazza (not named by us may I add). It was all a bit too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence. Quite clearly bigger forces were at play. The other weird thing - I have sun in cancer and moon in pisces, he has moon in cancer and sun in pisces.
As it turned out this was the beginning of my prayers coming true. Him entering my life ushered in the greater love and intimacy I sought, not simply because of the depth of our soul connection, but in the way our conversations, our trips to Neolithic stones together, our healing of each other, all of this allowed a part of me that had laid hidden to be revealed, and it was this part that helped me to feel greater love and to be open to greater intimacy in all areas of my life, with E too.
Life has changed significantly since then.
Just recently I was introduced to the head gardener at Chalice Wells in Glastonbury, and he taught me how to work with the garden through dowsing to remove blocks and obstacles on the soul path and bring greater harmony not only to the garden but to all of life.
I returned home inspired and set to task, and inspired my stone friend in the process. He approached his garden differently, removed ivy which was suffocating trees, delved deeper into the thick of the trees, and discovered Neolithic stones he hadn’t known were there in all the many years he has lived on the property. One of the stones is a healing stone and it has gifted us both insight after sitting against it. It feels like magic.
I have a strong sense that it is Reiki that truly brings magic to life. It connects us to the energetic force shaping everything we see and feel. It absolutely supports our soul path and will usher in people, books, situations that help us tread this path more consciously.
This is a path that communicates in the language of light, in symbols. Symbols are everywhere, in all spiritual traditions. Reiki has symbols too.
My life is richer for these symbols. There is greater purpose and fulfilment.
I think of my life before Reiki and it was dark and limiting. I was encouraged to fit into the mainstream but the mainstream didn't fit, and my mind, body and soul knew it.
Reiki helped me to wake up. It helped me to remember. It opened my world beyond the 3D reality.
My life is not perfect, because perfect doesn’t exist, but even when the challenges come, there is certain aliveness that was lacking all those years ago.
Reiki transforms our relationships. It helps us to overcome our wounding and our traumas that get in the way of our ability to give and received love. This too is magic.
Many might label me a witch, and this is true to a certain extent. But witches, like mystics, are just people who connect with their inner power, working in harmony with unseen forces to bend and shape reality.
We’re people who choose to live untethered to society’s exceptions and systems, disinterested in trends, couldn’t care less about opinions, increasingly love and accept ourselves unconditionally and allow our lives to be guided by our heart, while listening to and trusting in our intuition. We are open to magic and mystery.
Ultimately though, it is about freedom and living an ordinary life in a non-ordinary way.
Many of you reading this are Reiki attuned and seeing increasing magic in your life too, realising that there is much more to this universe than what we are programmed and conditioned to see and believe. It is hard. We are up against our conditioning and programming and the expectation of others, especially family members.
No one likes it when we change. It threatens them because our relationship with them has to change. We increasingly take responsibility for our life, recognise our worth and tighten our boundaries - we cannot be manipulated like we used to be, patterns have to change. It also prompts them to look at their own life, which can be desperately uncomfortable - better to make you the problem.
Life waxes and wanes. There are always challenges and lessons. Yet in those darker mmoments, where my faith is tested, I remember the moments of magic. This keeps me steady. Like the memory holds a light for me. And I always have Reiki in my hands.
It is there for us if we believe in it, if we start to remember who we are, allow the great amnesia to lift, to remember what was forgotten when society turned to logic and reason. And don’t forget, Reiki helps - it brings a certain aliveness that shapes our life beyond our wildest imaginings, we just have to open to it.
