SO WHAT IS THE NEPALI WOMEN’S YOGA PROJECT ALL ABOUT?
Established by Devika and Emma during the summer of 2007, the Nepali Yoga Women’s Project is dedicated to addressing the socio-economic problems and discriminations facing many of the women in Pokhara, Nepal.
The Project targets women from poor families who would like to earn their own money to help pay towards their family’s expenses and yet are often uneducated and lack the basic skills to get a job, and then women who are cast aside by society through no fault of their own and who perhaps need help to re-establish themselves, and then those who simply want to have the opportunity to do something different with their lives but don’t know where to start.
On a broad scale, the Project intends to address these problems and discriminations by increasing public awareness and providing opportunities for economic, social and personal self-empowerment to foster self-reliance and self-confidence.
to encourage creativity and self-expression, massage and acupressure skills, awareness of local customs and healing practices, practical education, written and spoken English skills, Hatha yoga classes and Reiki treatments, shelter and healthy food where necessary, a calm, peaceful and natural environment conducive to encouraging self empowerment and self-healing (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) and, where necessary, access to medical assistance plus short term financial support.
In short the Project will not catch fish for the women; it will teach them how to fish.
